Alcohol consists of one substance only, ethanol. Dagga contains 400 different chemicals, 60 of these have been proven to cause cancer. Alcohol is eliminated from the body in a few hours. THC, delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol, the strongest intoxicating substance in dagga, stays in the body fat for months, even years. A person who smokes dagga 2 or 3 times a week is constantly under the influence of the substance. Dagga damages the bodies' immune system, which leads to greater susceptibility to infectious disease. Alcohol does not.

All of the above does not mean that alcohol isn't harmful. 43percent of people who consume alcohol on a daily basis usually are abusive or may have domestic or personal problems, these people see alcohol as a way out or their problems. Drinking and driving is also one of the main causes of death in our society. People have the will power to control the amount of alcohol consumed into their body.

Drugs are harmful to the people who consume it and the people who don't. Firstly drugs are illegal and because it is illegal it is usually expensive and people who use it are usually poor or come from urban neighborhoods. Today, however, people of high stature and economic levels abuse drugs. Some people also use drugs to relieve stress and to forget about their problems, just like alcohol. An estimated 16.8 million people around the world classified themselves as drug users. Eight in ten teenagers between 15 to 21 have tried drugs at least once, while three in ten admitted current use. Almost 15 million people, five percent of the population over the age of 12 years uses dagga on a daily basis.
