THE THEIF BY MEGHAN WHALEN TURNER 12 CHAPTERS CHARACTER LIST 1) Gen (Eugenides): He claims to be the world's greatest thief, but he has finally been caught and is in the dungeon.

2) The Magus: He Resides in Sounis, and he is the king's scholar.

3) King of Sounis: He is the king of Sounis.

4) Sophos: He is the nephew of the King.

5) Ambiades: He is the son of a due who is taking after the Magus.

6) Hamiathes: She is an ancient goddess.

Setting: Ancient Greece Year: Unknown Message In the story the Magus proposes an offer to Gen. He gave Gen the opportunity to be free of the Dungeon if he helps steal something for the king. On the trip to steal this item Gen and the Magus became very close. After Gen steals the item he gives it to the Magus and then later steals it during a fight with some people.

He then leads the Magus to believe he lost it. So when they are almost home Gen gives the Item to his Queen who is of another country and deceives the Magus. The message is don't trust some one you really do not know.

Chapter 1 Plot In chapter Gen a skilled Thief is in a dungeon, he had been caught while bragging at a wine shop about his last heist. One day the King's scholar the Mager offered him a proposal. He told Gen that if he would help the king by stealing something. Gen agreed to the proposal only if they would stick to there deal and release Gen if he successfully executed his mission to steal what ever it was that he had to steal.

Characters: Pol, Gen, Sophos, The Mager, Ambiades Prediction: Gen will accept and start his journey, but he will be left in the dark about where they are going.

Chapter 2 Plot: In the Second chapter Gen is brought from his cell and they start the journey to the location of the thing his is going to steal. As they are getting ready to leave The Magus refers to Gen as a tool and not a person. They traveled by horse and Gem was very weak from many months in the dungeon so they had to make numerous stops to let him rest. They made their first stop in Methana to stay for the night. The owner would not let Gen in the building till he washed up because he stank extremely badly. The two people who came along for the journey helped Gen wash up. Gen did not know their names so he named them the Useless's. When Gen was finished they replaced his clothes and the other man who was a soldier named Pol that came along, treated Gens cuts on his wrist from the shackles he wore in the dungeon. Gen started to appreciate Pol. They then went to bed.

Characters: Gen, Pol, The Mager, Sophos, and Ambiades Prediction: That Gen would learn the names of the Useless's, and he would start to talk more with the others.

Chapter: 3 Plot: Gen woke in the morning and was told to wash again because he still had some dirt from the many months of being in the dungeon left on him. He ate as much as possible at breakfast and stuffed some oranges in his pocket for later on the trip. He found out that the older useless's name was Ambiades and the younger Sophos. They started their journey and the landlady asked Gen if prison was so bad and he said no to comfort her because her son was there. They eventually reached Envisa where they ate and continued on into the night till they reached a town with an inn, where they could sleep. Then they got supplies and headed on till dark and slept out side.

Characters: Gen, Pol, TheMager, Sophos, and Ambiades Prediction: That Ambiades and Gen would get in a fight.

Chapter: 4 Plot: They woke and started the trip; En and the others talked to each other and started small talk. They reached a small farmhouse at the end of the trail at the base of a mountain and got provisions. They spent the night I the farm house and when En woke he noticed Poll giving Sophos and Ambiades fencing lessons. They soon started the journey through the pass off the mountains and then reached the other side where they had to climb down a steep cliff. They were now in Eddis. They discussed the gods that ruled over the others. The name was Hamiathes she governs all except her mother the earth. They then discussed the Hamiathes gift, which was what was passed on to the next ruler. But the gift disappeared. Gen soon found out that they were out there to steal a rock call Hamiathes Gift from a fairy tale so the king of Sounis could gain control of Eddis Characters: Gen, Pol, The Magus, Ambiades, and Sophos Prediction: Gen would start to believe that the gift existed and he would steal it.

Chapter: 5 Plot- Gen explained to everyone how the gods came about. He told the story of how mother earth created the sky for company then the sky wished he could see him self so earth put lakes on herself to act as mirrors for the sky, the sky got big headed and said he was far prettier than the earth. Earth was offended so she covered herself with forest, mountains, and streams. She also covered the lakes with the tree branches and the sky became angry and turned dust into people to make the earth angry. Then the people prayed to the sky and thanked the sky. Gen also told them that he was named after the great god Eugenides the god of thieves. Gen continued to lecture about his life all through the day. When they slept Gen woke and noticed that every one took turns on guard keeping an eye on Gen while he slept.

Characters: Gen, Pol, The Mager, Ambiades, and Sophos.

Prediction: The rest of the party would treat Gen better, because they know him better.

Chapter: 6 Plot- The next day they ran out of food and water. They traveled a few miles where they would get some provisions. They continued on till they reached the sea of olives, Thousands of olive trees. Gen had recovered from many days out of prison and was ahead of the others going down the trail. They found a good place to make camp and The Magus went into town to get horses and provisions. While the others waited Pol continued the fencing lessons, and Gen could not bare to watch because he wanted to help Sophos with the problems he was having. The magus soon returned with the horses and provisions. Every one packed the horses up and continued on. Gen continued his stories about Eugenides and the other gods for the duration of their trip to the next stop.

Characters: Gen, Pol, The Magus, Ambiades, and Sophos.

.Prediction: They were almost to their destination.

Chapter: 7 Plot- Gen felt that him and the Magus were getting along very well until the next mourning most of the food was missing and they believed that Gen took it. So the Magus punished Gen with a horse crop. This put The Magus back on Gens bad side, and the others treated Gen once again like a tool. The journey continued on but with out Ambiades because he was left to watch over the horses because they could not continue. When they reached the place where Gen was needed they informed him that at Midnight the river would empty and would reveal the door to the secret palace that held he gift. Gen had to be swift and he only had four nights to try to recover the gift. On the first night Gen searched the Temple but almost was caught in a trap that surly would have been his end. So he made a mental map and returned to the surface with out the gift. The second night he searched all night for a secret door but could not find one. All there was a bunch of dead end corridors. And one of the halls had obsidian in the wall that resembled glass. But seemed like nothing was behind it. So he returned to the surface just before the river returned for the day. The third night he broke the obsidian and found a set of stairs leading up behind it. At the top were what seemed to be statues but were the actual live gods. He heard the river coming and grabbed the gift from the Hamiathes goddess and ran. He did not remember making it out but awoke on the riverbank.

Characters: Ambiades, Gen, Pol, TheMager, and Sophos PREDICTION: Gen would return with the Magus Chapter: 8 Plot- Gen described the temple to the others and held back telling about the gods because he would be laughed at. They headed back and met up with Ambiades but a little way down the trail they were discovered by soldiers from the area and were in a fight. Gen hid in a tree and the others killed off the few soldiers. During the fight The Magus lost the gift which was a small rock with the gods initials in it and had some gem showing. Gen convinced them that it was lost and they must hurry before more soldiers arrive so they did.

Characters: Sophos, Gen, Ambiades, The Mager, and Pol Prediction: I think that Gen has the gift.

Chapter: 9 Plot- Just as they reached the cliff Gen volunteered to stay behind and slow down the soldiers, because he did not trust returning to Sounis and possibly be locked up again.

They agreed and Gen tried to fend off the soldiers but lost. When he woke he was in a cell in the city of Atollia. He discovered the others except Pol and Ambiades were also there. The other two died fighting.

Characters: Gen, The Mager, And Sophos Prediction: I believe that they will be sentenced to death Chapter: 10 Plot- Gen persuaded them to escape with him that night. They followed him through the city in the dark and all the way to Eddis with guards just about a mile behind! When they reached Eddis they were escorted to the queen of Eddis. Gen then gave her the gift of Hamiathes. The Magus was surprised that Gen had it the whole time. He stole it during the fight and he then informed that Gen was the Queens thief he was sent to recover the gift and deceive the Sounis king. He was From Eddis not Sounis and everyone was amazed. Now the gift was in the hands of the rightful people who worshipped the gods and they sent Sophos and The Mager home.
