Running head: MANAGEMENT PLANNING
University of Phoenix
Planning is a necessity of management in today's growing workforce. The planning function of management is important because all other functions of management stem from the planning function. Managers can organize, lead and control only if the function of planning is properly conducted and managed by the organization (Carr, 1992).

Leadership at Cingular Wireless (AT&T) stems from effective planning and identifying opportunities and avoiding problems. With different levels of management, different types of planning must be integrated. All levels of management must come together to make an effective, organized plan (Freudberg, 2005).
Planning produces fundamental decisions and actions that shape and guide what an organization is and can be defined as creative problem solving. During the planning process, strategy and goals are the main focus.
Managers practice the tasks of strategic planning which involves, defining a mission, conducting a situation analysis, setting goals and objectives as well as monitoring the plan itself (Gregg, 2005).
A mission statement is a broad, but clear and concise summary of what an organization does. Then it leads to supporting tactical and operational plans in turn leading to supporting objectives. Managers at Cingular Wireless (AT&T) base planning terminology on the mission statement "To be the most highly regarded wireless company in the world, with a driving focus around best-in-class sales and service" (Freudberg, 2005). The belief to be the best wireless company in the world comes with the responsibility of delivering that promise (Carr, 1992).
