Teen suicide in the U.S. is an extremely disturbing problem. Many of our teenagers feel that they have no hope in this life, and all that is left to do is to die. Some teens use suicide as a tactic to change, possibly manipulate, others into doing what they want them to do. Some believe, in some unfortunate way, that they deserve to die. Whatever the cause of suicide may be it is a big problem for all of us.
The Jason Foundation tries to combat teen suicide by informing people about it. They offer workshops and classes to help teachers and parents learn the truth about suicide. The Jason foundation states that suicide is the "Third leading cause of death for ages 15-24 and fourth for ages 10-14." It also states that according to the U.S. Department of Health there are "over 2700 attempts each day in our nation by youth ages 12 to 17."
"More teenagers and young adults have died of suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia and influenza, and chronic lung disease COMBINED" says the Jason foundation. That is amazing! What is happening in this country to make our young people think there is no hope for life? (The Jason Foundation)
The American Association of Suicidology is another foundation making an effort to inform teens, parents and teachers about the little known facts of suicide. Their website states "Every 2 hours and 11 minutes a person under the age of 25 completes suicide." Also that the suicide rate for females age 15 - 24 has doubled in the last 60 years and has quadrupled for males of the same age. (American Association of Suicidology)
