On April 15 the world was shocked when the first reports came out about the sinking of the RMS Titanic. The RMS Titanic of the White Star Line was the largest ship the world had ever known. (The Sinking of the S.S. Titanic). The ship was sailing from Southampton to New York. The ships makers where Messrs. Harland & Wolff, at Belfast. (The Sinking of the S.S. Titanic) They claimed that the ship was unsinkable. They thought this, because the ship size was incredible. It weighted over 46,328 tons, its length was over 852 feet, its depth was 65 feet, and its width was 92 feet. (The Sinking of the S.S. Titanic) Even though the ship had such great size to its advantage it proved that it was not unsinkable. It also came apparent that these men thought the ship to be unsinkable due to the lack of lifeboats that were on the ship.

On April 15, during the early morning hours the ship hit an iceberg. When the ship hit the iceberg it punctured about four compartments of the ship. (The Sinking of the S.S. Titanic) In the matter of a few hours the ship quickly began to sink. The ship that day was carrying 2208 people. 1316 of the people were passengers, and 892 were made up of the crew.
