Empathy is a skill that we all should have, it is very important for it to be present in society. In the novel "To Kill A Mockingbird" we see empathy demonstrated many times by characters like Atticus, Scout and Jem. These characters are all great examples of mockingbirds who exhibit empathy. Empathy comes easy to some of the characters and others are great examples of how empathy is learned.

Throughout the whole novel Atticus Finch exhibits and teaches empathy to many characters. Empathy comes easy for Atticus because of his personality, he is known to be a kind and understanding and understanding person therefore he can demonstrate empathy towards others. He has demonstrated empathy towards others by telling Scout "you never really understand a person until you consider things in their point of view- until you climb into their skin and walk around in it."

When he said that he was talking about Miss. Caroline, he was trying to tell Scout that she should not dislike her because all she is trying to do is help her students. Atticus feels that she does not deserve that hate and shows empathy for her. He also demonstrated empathy when he took the Tom Robison case, Atticus felt that Tom was innocent and deserved a fair chance in court. He knew that by taking that case he would be jugged in the town by everyone because of the racial prejudice that was present. Boo Radley was shown empathy by Atticus when he told Jem to leave him alone. When Jem was asking lots of questions about the Radley's Atticus told him to leave them alone because the family faced social prejudice in many ways by everyone in town.
