Legalizing Marijuana Should Marijuana really be legalized for medicinal purposes? This has been a question for many years now, dating back to nearly 5,000 years ago. Marijuana, up until 1941, was used medically for various disorders such as the reduction of pain from rheumatism and to treat digestive disorders. (1) Since government passed the Marijuana Tax Act, physicians were basically forced to quit prescribing this drug for medicinal purposes. (4) Marijuana should be legalized once again for medicinal purposes ONLY and available to those in dire need for treatment of cancer, arthritis, and many disorders and diseases. Yes, it is true that marijuana is already legal in a couple states under certain circumstances, but that doesn?t help others around the United States where it?s not yet. I know that I would want it legal in my state if I was dying and could use it for a medicinal purpose.

Not many people believe marijuana should be legalized for any purpose, whether it is medicinal purposes or for personal use. Citizens often disagree with the legalization for various reasons. There has been written documentation that people most commonly state: Smoked marijuana damages the brain, heart, lungs, and immune system. It impairs learning and interferes with memory, perception, and judgment. Smoked marijuana contains cancer-causing compounds and has been implicated in a high percentage of automobile crashes and workplace accidents. Marijuana-related visits to hospital emergency rooms have tripled since 1990. Marijuana is also associated with gateway behavior leading to more extensive drug use. This phenomenon poses serious concerns given the significant increase in marijuana use by teenagers.
