Affirmative action plays a major role in many companies today. Affirmative action policies should be implemented to avoid many of the problems with discrimination that arise in many workplaces, due to employers not wanting to hire minorities, women, and people with disabilities.

What is Affirmative Action? Affirmative Action is used in the United States to increase the right of minorities. Minorities are any groups of people separated by their religion, sex, race, etc. (Paul Finkelman). In the workplace, Affirmative Action plays a big roll which is especially directed towards minorities. Affirmative Action is used in college and school admissions as a result past incidents of discrimination towards its applicants (Paul Finkelman).

Although Affirmative Action has its pros and cons towards people, companies, and schools, it is a magnificent idea because it provides equal opportunities to everyone. It also has its downfalls too. Affirmative Action stops businesses from hiring too many people of the same group or even the qualified person for job.

This really hurts a business because they can not hire the person who would benefit their business the most.

Since Affirmative Action first started, many commissions have been reaching out to help minorities. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission was developed to make sure there was fair employment for every person. However, other kinds of government programs were designed to benefit female minorities and minority owned businesses.

In the 1900s Affirmative Action has been a highly charged legal and political issue and a controversial subject ever since its beginning (Paul Finkelman). Ultimately, Affirmative Action in the workplace may survive mostly as a function of our increasingly global and diverse economy. When seriously implemented, affirmative action can have a definite influence on offering minorities opportunities and equal rights (Leporini).
