The folktale Beowulf is a book written by Robert Nye. The story was created 3790 years ago. The main character in the story was Beowulf. Some other characters in the story were Hrothgar, Grendel, Unferth, and Grendel's mom. A folktale is a story that has a hero, magic, gods, and a villain. The hero of Beowulf was Beowulf. Beowulf came to the Land of the Danes to help Hrothgar get rid of the evil in the land by killing Grendel and his mother. The movie Beowulf was directed by Baz Luhrman. The movie Beowulf was created in the 1990's. The story was set in the future at around 3000 A.D. The main character of the movie was Beowulf. Some of the other characters were Roland(Unferth), Hrothgar, Kyra(Hrothgar's daughter), Grendel, and Grendel's mom. The hero in the movie is Beowulf. The storyline is similar to the book except a few characters and the setting of the story.

These two versions of Beowulf can be compared and contrasted in three areas: Beowulf, Grendel and the setting.

The similarities of Beowulf in the book and the movie are that Beowulf was the hero in both stories. In both stories Beowulf killed Grendel and his mother. Beowulf took Grendel's arm off in both the movie and the book. In the book Beowulf was not the average hero. He was not very tall, used his brain more than his brawn, and had bad eyesight. In the book Beowulf came from the land of the Geats. He came to the Land of the Danes on a ship. He takes advice from the coastguard and leaves his sword behind. The coast guard told Beowulf that fighting Grendel would be like fighting the sea, so that's why Beowulf left his sword behind. In the book...
