The Effects Of Drug Use

There are many different types of drugs in the world today. Some are good, like prescription drugs prescribed by a doctor. Then there are other drugs, mainly found in the black market. These drugs are usually highly addictive, and costly. Prolonged use and abuse of these narcotics can hold serious repercussions. There are many different effects depending on the drug being used. It is for this reason that I have broken down the effects into the three most widely used types of drugs today: marijuana, cocaine, and LSD.

Marijuana

Marijuana is a green or brown mixture of dried, broken up flowers and leaves of Cannabis Sativa, the hemp plant. Marijuana contains nearly 400 chemicals. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is the "active ingredient" found in the hemp plant that accounts for the psychoactive effects. This is what determines the strength of the drug. Most marijuana contains 3 percent THC, but can be found as high as 24 percent.

Oils from female hemp plants can contain as much as 70 percent THC. The method of use of this drug is to smoke it, but can also be mixed into food or used to brew tea. Marijuana is the most commonly used drug in the US, being used by 10 million Americans each month.

Very shorty after inhaling marijuana smoke, side effects start to take place including dry mouth, loss of coordination, slow reaction time, poor sense of balance, and rapid heartbeat. Also, blood vessels in the eye expand creating redness in the eyes.

Marijuana has a big effect on the brain. THC suppresses neurons in the hippocampus, the part of the brain that controls learning, memory, and emotions. Chronic abuse is associated with impaired attention and memory, while prenatal exposure is associated with impaired verbal...
