Alienation Isolated. Alone. How would you feel if you were isolated from society? Although one may not know it, millions of people feel isolated from society everyday. One prime example is Gregor Samsa. As the main character in the novel, The Metamorphosis, by Franz Kafka, Gregor felt when he woke up one morning from a disturbing dream, only to find he was changed into a monstrous vermin. This came as a shock to Gregor, for he was once a successful salesman, but then he suddenly transformed into a giant insect, and became an object of disgrace to his family, and outsider in his own home, and an alienated man.

Once Gregor's unforeseen transformation had taken place, his sister, Grete would regularly come to his room, put down all his new favorite foods, tidy his room, and hope one day he would return to his normal state. Soon after, Grete too transformed into an unhopeful, uncaring, selfish human being.

She began to lag in her caring of Gregor. Kafka show this particular situation when he states, "No longer what she could do to give Gregor a special treat, his sister before running to business every morning and afternoon, hurriedly shoved any old food into Gregor's room with her foot…(pg.43)." Gregor is now being denied any kind of personal attention from everyone in his family. He thought his sister was the only one who would care for him, due to the fact he had always wanted the best for Grete before his transformation. He viewed the situation wrong; Grete had suddenly given up on Gregor and no longer believes that the hideous has potential in being her brother. She even said, "If it were Gregor, he would have realized a long time ago that it isn't possible for human beings...
