Physicians

Physicians serve a fundamental role in our society and have an effect upon all our lives. Physicians are licensed practitioners of medicine who examine patients, obtain medical histories, and order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests. They diagnose illnesses, prescribe medications, and administer treatment for people suffering from injury or diseases. They also advise and counsel patients on good health practices, such as diet, hygiene, and preventive health care.

There are two types of Physicians: The M.D. - Doctor of Medicine-and the D.O.-Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. M.D.s also are known as allopathic physicians. While both M.D.s and D.O.s may use all accepted methods of treatment, including drugs and surgery, D.O.s place special emphasis on the body's musculoskeletal system, preventive medicine, and holistic patient care. Most physicians specialize in one branch of medicine. Medical specialties for which there is training include internal medicine,pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, radiology, surgery, anesthesiology, pathology,ophthalmology, or family medicine.

Pediatricians, general and family practitioners, and general internists are often called primary care physicians since they are the first health professionals patients usually consult. These physicians generally see the same patients on a regular basis for a variety of ailments and preventive treatment. They refer patients to other specialists when appropriate. Some physicians combine the practice of medicine with research or teaching in medical schools. It takes many years of education and training to become a physician: 4 years of undergraduate school, 4 years of medical school, and 3 to 8 years of internship and residency, depending on the specialty selected. Physicians have among the highest average earnings of any occupational group. Physicians earn $44,000 to 160,000 to 250,000 a year.
