Oliver Twist is born in a workhouse and, his mother dies shortly after giving birth to him. Being an orphan all his life, he grows up in a badly run home for orphan boys and later moves to a workhouse. Oliver got kicked out of the house by Mr. Bumble, the parish beadle, and was sold to an undertaker. After the other apprentice made rude comments to Oliver about his mother, he decides to run away toward London. Just outside London Oliver meets Jack Dawkins who offers him shelter in Fagin's house in London. Fagin is a career criminal who trains orphan boys to pick pockets. Oliver got sent out on his first mission where he was almost to blame for the crime. He is taken in by Mr. Brownlow, the man whose handkerchief was almost stolen. Mr. Brownlow notices Oliver's resemblance to a portrait of a young woman that he owns.

Oliver is content, but is stolen by Bill Sikes and Nancy. They bring him back to Fagin, and he is sent to assist Sikes in a burglary. Oliver was shot by the servant, but Sikes gets away. Oliver is taken in by Mrs. Maylie and Rose. After spending the summer there, Fagin and a mysterious man named Monks want to recapture Oliver. His mother has left a golden locket behind, and Monks obtains and destroys it. When the Maylies come to London, Nancy secretly meets with Rose to tell her about Fagin's plans. When word of Nancy's plan reaches Sikes, he brutally murders her and leaves London. Due to Sikes guilty conscience, he hangs himself while trying to escape. Mr. Brownlow, whom with the Maylies have reunited Oliver, confronts Monks and gets the truth about Oliver's parentage. Monks is Oliver's half brother. Mr. Leeford, their...
