Sylvia Plath, born in 1932, was an American poet, novelist, short story writer, and essayist. Most famously known as a poet, Plath managed to generate a new genre of "confessional poetry". Since her suicide, Sylvia Plath has become an icon in many eyes and is considered one of the best poets of her generation.
Plath was born in Jamaica Plain a small part of Boston, Massachusetts. Her father, Otto, a College professor died of an embolism after having surgery in 1940. After hearing of her father's death, Plath said "I'll never speak to God again." " It is said that Plath never fully recovered from her father's death. Her flair of poetry was shown when she published her first poem at just 8 years old.

She continued to build her writing career as she wrote and published in both the college newspaper and in large-circulation magazines like Seventeen and Harper's. Amongst all her writing and College life, Plath sadly developed periodic bouts of depression and insomnia. Her thoughts of suicide were often found through entries in her journal she regularly kept.
Plath soon received a scholarship to Cambridge University, England where she continued to write poetry. It was at Cambridge where she met the English poet Ted Hughes.
