I. Objective(s): To determine the melting points of 2 unknown compounds.

II. Procedure: 1) Place a small quantity of unknown A in a capillary tube.

2) Setup 3) Place into the hot water.

4) Wait till chemical melts.

5) Lift clamp out of water.

6) Record the temperature at which it crystallizes.

7) Repeat for 3 good values.

8) Repeat 1-7 for chemical B.

III. Results: A B Melting Points (C): 1) 70.1 1) 60.8 2) 70.3 2) 70.8 3) 72.6 3) 71.4 AVERAGE: 71 67.7 VI. Error Analysis: 1) One problem we had was estimating the temperature of the melting point because we weren?t quick enough to read it before it started to cool down.

2) We had difficulties trying to tie the little tube to the .7 72.6 - 71 1.6 Chemical B x x x-x 60.8 - 67.7 6.9 70.8 - 67.7 3.1 714 - 67.7

3.7 thermometer without it breaking.

1) We had difficulties trying to get the chemical in the tubes without breaking the tube either.

2) We had difficulties trying to have the chemical pushed down to the bottom of the tube. It took a lot of time and patience to do that.

3) Chemical A X X X-X 70.1 - 71 .9 70.3 - 71
