Cloning - The View of Different Religions & Nations

1.CHRISTIANITY

a.Status of the Embryo

- embryo is human from conception - has a soul

- cloning is useful for healing

b.Interference w/ God's work

- man is a steward (helper, sub, regent) of creation (Roman Catholic)

- man is a 'co-creator' (Protestant)

- the most skeptical about interfering w/ God

c.Abortion

- allowed all the way until birth if for medical reason

- not allowed if the child is from rape or sick

- not allowed to just get rid of the child

d.Kinship (problem w/ original/0 age, clone is the donor's twin)

- not a problem in Christianity

- Their problem: what is the purpose of this embryo? What are the intentions w/ this embryo? can we determine the design of a human?

2.JUDAISM

a.Status of the embryo

- up to 40 days embryo is just water

- human-like shape & healing are very important

b.Interference w/ God's work

- "partnership w/ God" - you can interfere

c.Abortion

- allowed if for medical reasons, child is from rape or sick

- not allowed to just get rid of the child

d.Kinship (problem w/ original/0 age, clone is the donor's twin)

- Mother determines the religion, father determines the tribe for the child "" 2 parents needed for passing on the religion

- some rabbis say rep. cloning has less problems than anonymous insemination - don't know the father, cloning is at least in the family

3.ISLAM

a.Status of the embryo

- up to 40 (120) days - just water - not human

- Muslim World League, Mekka - cells can be only derived from adults, children if no harm is done & w/ parents' consent, placenta/umbilical cord,
