Proper nutrition is important to good health. At least four of the 10 leading causes of death in the U.S.--heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes--are directly related to way individuals eat; diet is also implicated in scores of other conditions (InteliHealth, 2006). What eating choices and activity plans an individual makes directly affects the overall health of that individual. This paper will discuss the three most important things learned about nutritional habits and choices, my weight goals and a plan to change my current eating and activity patterns.

In the past four weeks, I have been documenting my food intake using the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP) website. During this time, I have learned how the foods that I choose impact my calories, vitamins and nutrients. Each plays an important role in how the body reacts to such foods. The first lesson that I learned taught me how little of some food groups that I consume.

Within my diet, the food groups of fruits, vegetables and milk are always lacking. This is because I am concerned with the amount of calories I consume each day. The food analysis provided me with education on which foods can be consumed which covers the food groups as well as provides low calories. Simple choices can be made to improve these areas. Including a banana and glass of low-fat milk with breakfast will improve the fruit and milk food groups. During lunch, adding a simple salad will add more vegetables to my daily intake. Eliminating certain snacks and replacing with an apple or orange will also improve the fruit group.
