Lowestoft Project

Introduction

In this project we are studying shopping and settlement hierarchies. This project aim is to find out where Lowestoft is on a shopping/Settlement hierarchy pyramid and if it is a middle order of the shopping hierarchy.

In order to do this, the following surveys were carried out:-

* Pedestrian count

* Questionnaire

* Land use map

These surveys will help us find out the aims of this project which are:-

* How far people travelled

* The shoppers habits

* Types of shops

* Shops grouped together.

We are also finding how many people will enter Lowestoft town centre and ask them how far they have travelled and what method of travel they used to get there.

This will help us decide on how important Lowestoft's CBD is.

The project is based in Lowestoft town CBD, which is thriving with pedestrians, because it has a variety of shops; it has a least one of every type of shop.

There were about 5 chain stores (Woolworths, WHSmith, Westgate, Newlook, Marks and Spencer.). There is also a Somerfields which has a multi-storey car park because of little space. I think Lowestoft matches a Burgess model because of Lowestoft's steady growth and my general knowledge of the town.

We have done a survey of the town on the 16th December. The weather was clear but with a chilly wind the temperature was very low. This meant not many people Journeyed into town for shopping. Plus it was school day so there were many young people of the high street so we couldn't get a wide range of information on what people were in town for and what they'd bought. Also this meant that our pedestrian counts were low. Here are some background images.

Shopping within urban centres can be arranged...
