Why have Wal-mart, Disney and McDonalds been able to stay on top for so long? In this world of ever-changing wants and needs, these companies have successfully managed to crack the code in change management. Their ability to forecast change and develop the process for implementation has greatly contributed to the success of these organizations. This is ultimately why overcoming resistance to change is critical to the OD process. Business can no longer rest on entirely on the achievements of yesterday; they must be prepared when their consumers call for change. There are many businesses that are on their way down largely due to the inability to adapt to the changes going on around them. The effort to successfully identify the need to change and implementation is crucial. In most cases this effort must come from the top-down, leadership must be involved and dedicated to the change process.

"If it's not broke, don't try and fix it", how many times has this been said? Individuals in organizations (especially if they have been there for a long time) will have reservations about change. There are many factors that contribute to resisting change which include; self-interest, where someone has achieved status, privilege or self-esteem through effective use of an old system, they may see your plan as a threat. Fear of the unknown; they may become uncertain of their capabilities. Learning new skill, new systems or the ability to take on new roles. Differing perceptions, we all look at situations from different viewpoints, this must not be overlooked during the process. Trust also plays a role in change; individuals may become suspicious of sudden change. All of these factors contribute to...
