Course Evaluation

Q1. What methods are used to evaluate a course?

Q2. Why do we need to evaluate a course?

Q3. What criteria/areas could be used to evaluate a course?

A1. Methods of evaluating a course are:

Setting goals and targets to see if the course/students are achieving what's expected of them.

Giving the students questionnaires to see what they thought about the course and if it met their need.

Recording assessment results from students to ensure that the majority of the class has understood the course.

Analysing attendance records.

Use "Posit-Notes" at the end of the session to see what the students liked/dis-liked.

Have a "Pause and review" session with students & tutor to see that the course is reaching the needs of the students.

Seeking feedback from old students to see why they didn't proceed with their training etc "Questionnaires".

A2. Importance of course evaluations:

Without any course evaluation one couldn't be able to assess if the needs of the students were met in terms of the training that they require rather than what is on offer.

Course evaluation is useful for the lecturer to assess her/his own performance where students can comment on their preferred learning style etc or activities they enjoyed the most. The lecturer can then adopt this style and use it for the next session of students.

Was the course useful or has it-helped students to move on in their careers or helped them to gain access to another course. Course evaluation can also therefore be used assess to what extend does the course offer increased value to the student.

A3. Criteria/Areas which can be used to evaluate a course:

Taster or Sandwich courses
