The Hero of The Crucible

The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller in 1953. The play depicts the story of the witch-hunts and trials that happened in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. He compares the trials to his time in which politicians were being accused of being communists. This essay is about the person that is portrayed as a hero in the play. The hero of this play is John Proctor. First of all, he is a man that does not take sides in a conflict. This shows that he is a firm believer in his word. He also has a sharp, sneering way with people he thinks are hypocrites. Additionally, he is the type of man that is even tempered. He has a powerful body because he works his land with dedication. Finally, John Proctor is a person that is not easily led by rumors or by someone.

He prefers to follow his own way and make his own decisions.

John Proctor is described as a sinner, but he is a very truthful person. First, he has committed many sins in his life. One of the biggest sins that he committed was adultery with his servant Abigail, that was caring for his ill wife. One day Abigail and John Proctor are together and they discuss the relationship that they had. She tries to re-conquer by saying," Give me a word, John. A soft word" (1246). He refuses to fall into her web again and speaks to her firmly by saying," Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I'll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched," (1246).
