The Hour Glass

The hourglass - an emblem of human life. It symbolizes the eternal passage of time, the sand slipping away until there is no more, and therefore a continual reminder that life is finite, and therefore we should make the most of it while we can.

While searching for a topic on something that fascinates me, my mind went wondering for a good hour or so and out all the things in life that I had thought about, my gaze happens to fall upon the hour glass lying right in front of me. An object that has been always lying in my room with no great importance and of no use suddenly seemed to be the most captivating thing.

I find a lot of things fascinating; the falling of the last leaf on an autumn tree, the sound of the rain tapping on my window, the sun fading in to the night, a butterfly's erratic flight, the smell of the earth after it rains.

Every aspect of Nature itself intrigues me. I find a miracle in the growing of a mushroom or a field of daisies. But this hourglass holds a lot of meaning for me. It is a time capsule. Showing me how precious life is and how each grain of sand represents moments in my life.

Have you ever looked closely at an hourglass? The sand moves slowly but inexorably from one globe to the other. Don't you think that is much similar to life? I believe it all depends on our perspectives.

However, the hourglass is also used in other ways. With its two containers, the hour glass is an analogy between the upper and the lower, and the need to turn the hour glass from top to bottom at times to continue the process...
