Introduction

POET: The poem "TO A LOCOMOTIVE IN WINTER" is written by American poet, essayist, and journalist "WALT WHITMAN." He is also called the FATHER OF FREE VERSE (Thillmann, 2007).

Discussion

In this poem, the poet describes the structure and characteristics of a locomotive train in great detail. It is an interesting poem and is suitable for ages above 13 (Thillmann, 2007). In the poem WALT WHITMAN tells about the certain features of the train. He starts with the body of the train and admires beautifully the motion of parts and colors of the train's body (Thillmann, 2007). He says that the sight of the train is so appealing that in this beautiful season, even the snowflakes refuse to accompany winter season's charm. He also describes that a train is a set of parts fixed in an organized way and the motion is like small violent jerks that are pleasant to experience and it seems like the train is moving along with the poet's heart beats (Thillmann, 2007).

The poet now describes the colors and tells that the golden brass body of the train is very accurately measured and seems like tapering at the far end (Thillmann, 2007). The smoke coming out of the chimney gives a queer but pleasant color addition to the blue sky and the bogies follow the engine happily. Regardless of season, wind or strong breeze, even in a storm, the train keeps moving upon the track, like a humble servant of God, following and accomplishing His orders happily, in warm, cozy daylight and cold, translucent night time, and is once again to make the trip exciting and satisfying the poet again (Thillmann,
