Do you believe in fate? Many people believe fate direct their life and they are unable to overcome it by themselves. However, not everybody believes their life is directed by fate already. In the story The Outcasts of Poker Flat, John Oakhurst is a gambler and he doesn't believe fate. "He was too much of a gambler not to accept fate. With him life was at best an uncertain game, and he recognized the usual percentage in favor of the dealer." During the story, bad things happen to John Oakhurst and he had to face many terrible situations. Nonetheless, John still holds on with his beliefs and fight with his "fate" through the end of his life.
John Oakhurst is a "calm, handsome" gambler. He was famous from his calmness in the city. Unfortunately, he and couple people got kicked out of the city because they were considered as dangerous people or seek as people who are bad influences on others.

FateOn their way to new city--Sandy Bar, John sense that the group should move faster before their food was gone. "He pointed out to his companions curtly, with a philosophic commentary on the folly of "throwing up their hand before the game was played out."" This sentence shows that even though John is a gambler, but he had a very knowledgeable mind and doesn't like to risk. However, his companies doesn't listen to his advice and continue drank out during the travel. John then felt upset about his situation. "Yet he could not help feeling the want of that excitement which, singularly enough, was most conducive to that calm equanimity for which he was notorious."
