Casablanca Essay Casablanca was first released in 1942. This black and white movie staring Hunphrey Bogart as Rick and Ingrid Bergman as Ilsa became very popular and is now concidered a classic. The movie revolves around a romance and realism theme. Casablanca was a succesful movie because of the well used and hidden romance and realism in the plot, setting, and characterization.

Rick's introduced as a mysterious American expatriate who owns a Cafe in Casablanca. A former love of his, Ilsa Lunda and her husband Victor Laszlo, walk into Ricks Cafe in search of stolen letter of transit. In a flashback we learn that Rick and Ilsa were supposed to leave Paris together. ON the day of their departure, Ilsa decided to abandon Rick for Victor Laszlo so she leaves Rick a note saying she loves him, but can never see him again. Therefor, Rick and Ilsa's past is a romantic tale of love and selfsacrifice.

Rick feels betrayed by Ilsa and it makes their confrontatipn in Casablanca awkward. Rick and Ilsa begin to fall in love again, but this time they realize the realistic problems that they must face. For example Ilsas love for Victor and Victors own serge of honour.

Reality is emphasized through the use of the setting. Casablanca's hot weather, and poor merchants waitng for prospective buyers makes it a romantic city. Also Ricks Carfe seems to have alot of action and is where the wealthy people like to gamble. Casablanca is governed by French authorities who are subservient to German advisers. The marketplace turns into terror when a memeber of the Free French underground is shot by French police in front of the law courts.
