Small southern towns were not in the same financial or technical state as larger cities around the area. The depression affected all people, but it affected the farmers the most. In "To Kill a Mockingbird"ÃÂ nothin ever changes in Maycomb.
Maycomb was a poor, small, boring town. For example, " Atticus was related by blood or marriage to nearly every family in town."ÃÂ This shows that, the town was so small, that everybody knew each other. This shows that, Atticus probably had a lot of family there when the town was established, and everyone got married, and had kids. In addition, " A day was twenty-four hours long but seemed longer."ÃÂ This shows that, everybody was used to the same routine every day. This shows that, no one had anything to do or anywhere to go other than what they did every day, because they couldn't afford it.

To Kill a MockingbirdFor example, " Her speech was crisp for a Maycomb county inhabitant."ÃÂ This shows that, the people in Maycomb were not used to people talking in proper English, they were used to hearing people talk in slang. This shows that, they stereotyped everybody to talk like they did.
In addition, "Mr. Cunningham paid Atticus back with crops and other thing because he did not have any money."ÃÂ This shows that, even though the people had no money they still found ways to return the debt they owed people. This shows that, the depression affected the farmers the most.
