..."Could the killer still be here?" whispered Deputy Walter Mitty.

"Heavens, Jack, look at this!" cried Mitty as they entered the doorway. There was a woman lying on the floor in a pool of blood. She was obviously dead. The neighbor had told the dispatcher that the woman lived with her two small children. He had seen the kids in the front yard nearly every day. Now that they had found the mother and one child, they needed to find the smaller child, but they didn't know if the killer was still lurking in the house.

While Jack went up the stairs, Mitty searched the first floor. The dread of finding a child in a pool of blood was worse than the fear of finding the killer. His stomach began to get queasy. His ears began to pound loudly: ta-pocketa-pocketa-pocketa-pocketa-pocketa.He was breathing hard.

After searching each room, he made his way to the end of the narrow hall where the bathroom was.

He could smell soap. The bathtub was full of soapy water with toys floating. He turned to walk back down the hall, but his brain registered a glimpse of hair from the baby doll floating in the water.

His heart sank as he looked into the tub. The baby was in the tub, floating face down. "Oh, my Lord!" he yelled. It was a little girl. He grabbed an arm and pulled the flaccid body out of the water. Her skin was an awful shade of gray. Surely, she was dead!

Mitty began to run his CPR training through his head, the training he had taken every year since starting his job four years ago. He cursed as his mind flashed back and confusion set in. Things seemed to be going in slow motion.
